Who we are
Merengue-Ripiao.com was the brainchild of David David and Sydney Hutchinson, a musicologist specializing in Dominican music. The two saw a need for such a site since little information was available on the topic or perico ripiao, either on the web or elsewhere. Their goals were to provide information to fans of the music and publicity for tipico musicians. While the situation has changed somewhat since the site first went up in 2002, many of the sites that today exist to promote merengue tipico are monolingual and/or commercial in nature. We believe there is still a need for a site like this one, whose goals are primarily educational ones. In addition, while Santiago-based groups are well known among Dominicans everywhere, the New York scene is still a largely underground one.
We hope to become the premiere site for those interested in the music and culture of merengue tipico/perico ripiao in Santiago and New York.
