A number of restaurants and bars around the city offer merengue tipico shows on a regular basis. These are just a few. Call ahead to find out who's playing and when! And if you want to add some that aren't listed here, please email me.

MANHATTAN

Copacabana - 560 W. 34th Street (midtown Manhattan) 212-239-COPA. Just recently, the Copa has allowed tipico within its hallowed halls! Aguakate has played there several times. Check their events page at http://www.copacabanany.com/java.htm

Tubby Hook Cafe, Dyckman Street & Hudson River (Washington Heights, Manhattan) (212) 567-8086. Beautiful restaurant on the river; outdoor concerts throughout the summer. Tubby Hook Cafe has been CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!

BROOKLYN

Montemar,457 Bushwick Ave. (Bushwick/East Williamsburg, Brooklyn) 718-417-4468. Merengue tipico or bachata nearly every night of the week! Many big-name touring groups.

Macorix Restaurant, 100 Jamaica Ave. at Vermont St.(East New York, Brooklyn) 718-345-5516. Amazing sessions every Wednesday with a variety of local and guest musicians. Good food too. Right now (7/06) King de la Rosa is playing every week.

Gran Mar de Plata, 3175 Fulton Street (Cypress Hills/East New York, Brooklyn) 718-827-1717. Major touring groups play here frequently.

La Negra restaurant, Wilson Ave. near Cornelia (Bushwick). Ernestidio plays every other Saturday at 11 PM (July 8, July 22, etc.)

Andy Restaurant, 360 Central Ave. near Grove St. (Bushwick). Ernestidio plays every Friday at 11 PM.

 

QUEENS

El Gran Rancho Jubillee, 2304 94th St at 23rd Ave. (East Elmhurst, Queens; 2 blocks from LaGuardia Airport) 718-335-1700. A fun, touristy place to go. Has food too. Usually every Monday. Also a Manhattan branch at 1 Nagle Ave. (Inwood) 212-304-0100.

El Museo del Barrio

In conjunction with an excellent exhibit of merengue-related art at El Museo, a panel discussion on merengue is being offered. Even if you can't make the talks, try to see the exhibit, which includes great art by Dominicans and Dominican-Americans!
